5 out of 5 stars Great all around cookbook!   June 24, 2008

I originally purchased this cookbook for my Dad, who is a Type II Diabetic and normally doesn't cook much since Mom died. I flipped through it and tagged at least 15 different recipes that I wanted to try for myself. This is a great all around cookbook for several reasons:

* all of the recipes use nutritious, natural foods that are readily available
* most of the recipes call for only a few ingredients, so even those new to cooking will be successful
* the basic dishes are done in no time and can be frozen
* the recipes can be easily doubled or tripled
* it offers a delicious variety that are delightful and satisfying

I'm a professional firefighter/paramedic and I can tell you from experience that Type II Diabetes is in fact, becoming an epidemic. Firefighters have to watch what we eat as well, which is not always easy, because we need it to be fast, filling and able to withstand being reheated over and over again (since mealtime is usually interrupted). High fat, high salt and high cholesterol may be tasty, but they'll kill you. This book offers wonderful recipes that fit the bill and I should know - I've made them with fantastic results!

I used to say I'd eat what I wanted and just take more insulin. As I have gotten older, not sure about the wiser part, I have learned I must work with my diabetes if I plan to live. This book is an invaluable tool for doing that. Great meals made easily--even after a hard day at work. I love this book and the Italian Diabetic Meals in 30 Minutes or Less, also by Webb. Buy it and enjoy some delicious and healthy meals.

5 out of 5 stars An enthusiastic and valued addition   October 4, 2006

More than twenty million Americans have diabetes. One of the critical factors in the prevention and control of diabetes is the diet. Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, "Diabetic Meals In 30 Minutes - Or Less!" from the American Diabetes Association offers a compendium of recipes that are thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly' in their preparation and are characterized by their flavor and nutrition, as well as being ideal for diabetics while at the same time satisfying the appetite and pleasing the palate of every once else at the table too. From Oriental Ginger Pot; Angel Hair Pasta with Tomato Seafood Cream Sauce; and Grilled Turkey with Garlic Sauce; to Snow Peas with Waterchestnuts and Bamboo; Oven-Baked Parmesan Zucchini; and Chocolate Spice Pudding, "Diabetic Meals In 30 Minutes - Or Less!" is an enthusiastic and valued addition to any diabetic's cookbook shelf.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL ADDITION TO YOUR EATING LIFE!   April 9, 2010

I really know of no one who enjoys being on a diet or even having minor dietary restrictions for that matter. It is simply not fun. The best tasting meals, dishes and things all seem to be the ones that are the worse for us. I really, really despise diets, don't like them, not one bit. There is little is this world of food that I like better than a nice juicy cheese burger...go greasy that it drips down your arm when you eat it; loaded with cheese an served with an extra large plate of French fires; gain, plenty of grease. That and a nice chocolate malt...nummers!

But alas, the world is not also dished out the way we would like it and all good things come to an end eventually. It you are on a restricted diabetic diet, this book by Robyn Webb and published by the American Diabetes Association can go along way in making your life more bearable. Now this is not the beginning and end of all diabetic cook books, but it is certainly a nice addition to the arsenal you have available these days. Folks, I know food and I can tell you that there are many, many mighty tasty dishes between the covers of this book.

Each of the recipes have of course been kitchen tested (many in our own kitchen). This work also is a wonderful tool in figuring out portion sizes to aid blood sugar management and weight loss. It includes complete nutritional information and official ADA exchanges which is extremely helpful. Now, I am not one who normally likes quick to fix meals but many times they are simply necessary as we all led busy lives. I have not tried one of these meals that could not (with a bit of luck and skill) be prepared in 30 minutes or less.

The important factor there though is the taste of the food! There is something in the little book for everyone and I can attest to the fact that even the recipes of dishes that I am not overly fond of are actually quite good. The dishes I am fond of are terrific!

Everything is pretty well covered with good representative dishes; appetizers, Asian dishes, beans, beef, chicken, couscous, deserts, dips, fruit, pasta, pork, potatoes, pumpkin, rice, salads, salmon, sea foods, shrimp, soups, tomatoes, turkey and of course the ever present and available bane of my existence...vegetables.

It is very important to note that this book offers an extremely large variety which can lead the eater and diabetic to other books and other dishes. It is also important to note that each and ever recipe featured here can be expanded with little ease.

If you are stuck with a diet, either self imposed or medically imposed, you need not suffer quite as much as those of the past. This is good food folks and this little book is a wonderful help. I do highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and Easy's hard to beat!   April 23, 2010

I really like this book. People with diabetes are usually just as busy as anyone else, and have limited time to prepare meals. The special diet needed to control diabetes pretty much eliminates "fast food" restaurants, which means more - and sometimes different - home-cooked meals. This author clearly understands this and addresses it effectively. She gives good tips on timesaving techniques, including planning your menus and recipes before shopping so that you have what you'll need on hand.

In fact, it's a good book for anyone who wants to maintain a good, healthy diet when time is at a premium.

This is certainly the first book I would recommend to anyone who has diabetes.
